Training

1985 is considered as the year that the African Training Programme (ATP) took off. From that date to 1990, six regional workshops among "contributors to the support of children living in difficult conditions" were organised. In January 1990, the Cotonou workshop underscored the need to establish together, a training programme.

•To capitalise on the lessons drawn from the field experience in Africa, and the implementation of the participation of children and youths;
•To develop a local expertise tailored from the lessons learned from the African experience and make them available for training and strengthening of contributors;
•To set up a regional network of African trainers from the field experience
•To inspire in the contributors, the desire to reflect and question issues, and
•To develop a solidarity network with children living in difficult conditions.

Modules

The following modules have been developed in the programme, they all last for a week, except the one on the Participatory Action Research (PAR).

•Participatory approach
•Research - participatory action
•Listening sessions
•Participatory evaluation
•Alternative education.

Regional Thematic Workshops

They bring together AWCY delegates and supporting structures and facilitate the putting together of experiences and (development) on specific themes. During the period January 2000-July 2005, the following themes were treated once or several times:

•Communication
•Alternative Education
•Tecnical Assistance
•Detached children

Children and Youth Participation

Children and youth training has ushered in a generation of trainers who crop up from these same associations and which have thenceforth, been operating side by side the trainers - animators who on their part, also come from supporting structures. They especially intervene in the Technical assistance missions, in 25 towns each year since 2000. It concerns the strengthening of the AWCYs and the supporting structures in the same town in line with the difficulties that they are confronted with and as identified by these partners.
